Shredding, refining, selecting and screening woody materials (biomass)

Wood is a natural material that is highly resistant and flexible, with the plus of being 100% recyclable (if not treated). It is used in a number of industries and, once its initial function has been exhausted, it can be recycled and/or transformed into new products.
Generally, wood is recovered through the processes of shredding and crushing (refining), removal of non-woody substances (selection) and homogenization of particle sizes (screening).
Mion Ventoltermica, thanks to its vast experience in the field, offers its customers solutions for shredding, refining, selecting and screening wooden materials, in an effective and efficient manner.
Particular devices and precautions are taken by Mion Ventoltermica when handling potentially explosive dust, in compliance with EU Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX Directive).

More details about the solution

Mion Ventoltermica designs, manufactures and installs solutions for the recovery and treatment of woody materials in order to recycle them and/or turn them into new products.
The process is developed in the following phases:

  • Shredding and crushing (refining)
    In order to shred waste wood, one usually uses a shredding machine, followed by a blade mill or a hammer mill for crushing.
  • Removal of non-woody substances (selection)
    Once shredded and crushed, the woody residue is purified from any foreign substances it might contain. Metallic materials are removed by magnetic separation while inert materials are separated out using wind separators which operate using flows of air.
  • Homogenization and classification of particle sizes (screening)
    All remaining woody material is separated according to particle size using separators and/or screens. The fraction of the material that fits the particle size for the next process cycle continues its course, while the coarser material undergoes a second phase of particle size homogenization with refining machines.

Typical products made from recycled wood are:

  • chipboard for the furniture industry;
  • cellulose pulp for paper mills;
  • wooden cement blocks for the construction industry;
  • material used as fuel for boilers, and industrial furnaces and ovens;
  • pellets or briquettes.

If the processing involves potentially explosive dust, the machines are developed and manufactured by Mion Ventoltermica in accordance with EU Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX Directive).
